THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SYSTEM THINKING ANALYSIS USING ARCHIMATE IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY OF THE HOME EDUCATION SYSTEM IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
S. Yamamoto, M. Matsumoto
Purpose:
Can ArchiMate, which has the highest expressive ability as a business model notation, be used to analyze cases in the field of education? We will use ArchiMate to examine the home education system in British Columbia (hereafter, BC), Canada, clarify its characteristics, and show its issues and integration potential.
Analytical framework:
For a long time, it has been thought that the education system is separate from the scientific system and that the former cannot apply the theories created by the latter. In this study, we analyze the home education system in BC, Canada, using system thinking based on ArchiMate, the EA modelling language standardized by The Open Group. We express the complex intertwined structure of the phenomenon from multiple perspectives, making it easier to understand and organize and showing its characteristics.
Analytical methods:
In BC, there are two types of home education: homeschooling and the K-12 Online Learning (hereafter, OL) program, which is a distance education program.
1. We will investigate the differences in the legal status of the two, the reasons for implementing home education, and the environment surrounding them, and conduct a visual analysis using ArchiMate.
2. Based on an analysis of the OL school's curriculum and the relevant laws and regulations for distance education, we will express the distance education program using ArchiMate and conduct a multifaceted analysis.
Based on 1 and 2,
3. we will identify issues
4. and consider what conditions are necessary for integrating the two.
Data sources: Homeschooling Procedures & Guidelines Manual (2024), Interim Online Learning and Guidelines 2024-2025, interview survey with the vice principal of ROL School, data obtained from the ROL School website, previous research
Results: From multiple perspectives,
1. ArchiMate showed the differences between homeschooling and distance learning programs, which superficially appear to be similar home-based education systems.
2. ArchiMate showed the phenomenon that OL includes a diverse range of students.
By analyzing the results of ①and ②,
3. new issues were discovered.
4. The necessary conditions for the integration of the two educational systems were shown.
Significance of the study: This research is the first in the world to use ArchiMate to analyze a single event in pedagogy, and it has made a significant contribution to the field of analyzing pedagogy using system thinking. It is also highly significant because it is a research project combining the humanities and sciences using technology.
