DECONSTRUCTING STEREOTYPICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF ITALY IN TV SERIES THROUGH INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION
C. Calicchio
Since the late 20th century, language teaching has undergone a profound transformation, adopting the 'langueculture' paradigm. This well-established approach inextricably links a language to its culture, understood as a social construct often associated with the concept of 'Large cultures', that is, widely shared social representations.
However, while this connection is fundamental, it needs to be reconsidered considering globalization processes, which blur traditional cultural boundaries. Nevertheless, in foreign language teaching, a culturalist view of culture still prevails, associating individuals with a single cultural group and perpetuating stereotypes and prejudices. Very often, textbooks, teachers, and multimedia productions (films, TV series, social media reels) - which are the closest references to the foreign language (FL) for students - are full of stereotypical and anachronistic images.
This study aims to analyze the stereotypical representations of Italy and Italians (food, family, values) present in some internationally successful TV series available on online platforms. Through a content analysis of selected TV series titles, we aim to identify recurring patterns and reflect on how to deconstruct negative images in Italian FLT context, following intercultural education perspective. The goal is to promote a more complex and nuanced understanding of cultural identities, from a non-essentialist point of view.
