This paper presents an alternative teaching methodology for local school history teaching to primary school students through a virtual reality application and more specifically the creation of a 3D online museum of school history. The research aims to critically approach local school history in an engaging and innovative way, highlighting aspects that official historiography seems to ignore. The theoretical part of this paper includes the benefits of creating virtual 3D museums and the main theoretical/philosophical principles of this research, namely "history from below". The methodological part discusses how the school community collaborates to record the research evidence and the technical specifications implemented in creating the virtual museum.
Among the main research conclusions, we highlight:
a) the empowerment of the school community through the creation of a school museum,
b) the didactic benefits of dealing with local school history, and
c) the need to modernize historical research with the aid of new technologies.
Keywords: 3D museum, history of education, history from below.
