Knowledge Management (KM) principles have enhanced software industries and corporate sector to a very high value. It is a new concept for total quality management. KM is a process by which knowledge is created, shared and utilized to achieve specific organizational goals. Now this concept can be also utilized in technical institutions. In a technical education context KM is a systematic process of finding, organizing, distilling and presenting an information in away that improves learner, comprehension and ability to fulfil his/her current learning objectives.
According to Brown and Duguid profound changes in competitive age have made technical education institutions to think like a business. Hence, KM practices must be used in a technical institution to improve their quality and for effective management in processes like -

• Students & Alumni services
• Administrative services
• Strategic planning services
etc. By using KM technical institutions will be able to increase quality of their students and retain technology workforce in the face of severe employee shortages, expand new web based offering, work to analyse the cost effective use of technology, transform existing transaction based system to provide information not just data for better management of the institutions. Autonomous institutions like Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics can use KM for curriculum development. Engineering Colleges can use the knowledge management for research purpose.
