Due to dwindling economic standard, university libraries in Nigeria are not stocked with new, up-to-date materials, a major implication of this is that research efforts are often frustrated particularly among postgraduate students. Those enrolling for research masters’ and doctoral degrees spend unduly long time on the programme. The completion rate has not been encouraging either. A significant step taken by some institutions at solving this problem is provision of electronic-libraries. The observation is that despite this provision, research qualities and completion rate have not improved. Postgraduate students still have difficulties obtaining researchable topics, reviewing related literatures and are therefore somewhat isolated from global trends in their fields of enquiries. This accounted for low productivity in research and perhaps one of the reasons why Nigerian university was rated 5834th position in the world (Internet Lab, 2007). It becomes necessary therefore to investigate the extent to which Nigerian postgraduate students employ internet facilities to facilitate research and learning. Difficulties encountered in web usage as well as the relationship between field of study and internet usage for research will also be explored. This is with a view to channeling the course of action in improving the situation on ground.
The study adopted a survey design with a sample size of 300 postgraduate students from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The University becomes more suitable for the study as it is acclaimed “Nigeria ICT-leading University” where internet accessibility is comparatively higher than other institutions. Data were collected with the aid of Students’ Internet Searching Checklist (SISC). The resulting data were analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics.
Findings of the study are expected to provide information that will foster an improved behaviour and promote the logistics of accessibility, usability, and sustainability of internet for better research among Nigerian postgraduate students.
