ACTIONS TO SETTLE THE ACCESS AND INTEGRATION OF STUDENTS WITHIN THE “TUTORIAL ACTION PLAN FOR THE CHEMISTRY DEGREE” AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EXTREMADURA

The tutorial action plan for the chemistry degree (Plan de Acción Tutorial de la Titulación, PATT) started at the beginning of the 2005/06 course at the University of Extremadura. Nowadays, its fourth edition begins involving seventeen tutors and more than one hundred students from the first to the fifth level. The tasks of reception of new students have come developing for the last editions, with the innovations and modifications that it supposes.
At the beginning of July, the first meeting of tutors has been realised to carry out the planning of the tasks to develop during the reception of the students. In order to ensure the success the activities there is counted with the collaboration of the direction and the secretary of the Faculty.
The fundamental aspects that have determined the lines of action can be summarized in three following points:
a) The aid to complete their first application form at the University. When a student has decided to follow the Chemistry degree, he will be given with the application form other kind of useful information like a brief introduction to the aim of the PATT and the coordinates of his assigned tutor. In addition a set of available advisory tutors during the application period is presented to the student. These temporary tutors should advise students to the following aspect: - Presentation of the degree structure and programme.
- Different kinds of subjects and its meaning: main, compulsory, optional and free election.
- Optimization of schedules in the choice of optional and free election subjects.
- Orientation on the optional and free election subjects more advisable for a curriculum in Chemistry.
b) Student's distribution among the tutors of the PATT
c) First meeting of students and tutors in the month of October.
