M. Banas
Jagiellonian University (POLAND)
The Universities of the Third Age play an important role in building knowledge society, not only in Europe but also around the world, everywhere there, where knowledge constitutes the foundations of the economic, social, cultural, and all other human activities.
The over two decades long experience, of the concept of university of the third age in Poland, exemplifies a succeful solution of sharing new ideas (or new interpretations of old ones) to retired members of society.
The Polish model of “third age education” bases on the assumption, that retired people having a lifetime of experience, build a kind of collective knowledge, that should be constantly “updated”. Only than, the community/society can use its whole potential.
Observing the oldest groups of the students, who started their studies at the beginning of the 1980s, and then followed them up with self-studying, have proved that their perceptive abilities, as well as ability to retain new facts and concentrate, are much bigger than those of average 50-60 years old, who are now just starting their development in this aspect.
The University for Senior Citizens in Cracow, also called Jagiellonian University of the Third Age, is attracting many students by a curriculum, always shaped by current needs and issues. One of examples are programmes such as: 'Education for Health' - promoting healthy, active and pro-ecological lifestyle, ‘Modern literature’, ‘Psychology & Business’, ‘Post-modern Philosophy’ or ‘UE – organization and structure’.
The courses also help promote the attitude of a citizen aware of his/her rights and duties. Many plans are being made in the groups of students working on intercultural issues, European integration and the exchange of experiences related to permanent education.
The details of the curriculum of the Jagiellonian University of the Third Age, its realization and consequences for the education for knowledge society will be discussed in the article.
