WOMEN IN TOP EXECUTIVE POSITIONS AT SPANISH UNIVERSITIES
M. San Juan
Universidad de Sevilla (SPAIN)
In spite of the challenges of modern universities women are still represented less, in top level positions throughout the academic world. Although there are more women students than men, as we ascend the academic race positions we can see that, the number of women decreases vertiginously. This research is a qualitative investigation through case studies; in order to profound the causes of this situation. This investigation discuses topics in these areas: ‘glass ceiling’, ‘soil cement’, ‘through the Labyrinth’, ‘chilly climate’, ‘mentoring’, ‘queen bee syndrome’, ‘positive versus negative discrimination’, ‘women expectative’ and ‘token status’.
Furthermore, because of this absence of women in the academic world, there is a consequence of establishing new positive roles for women models in top positions. It is for this reason that this research contributes to establishing new roles for women executives, describing styles of leadership and contributions in the academic world.
