One impact of the World Wide Web on research in the social sciences has been the ability to reach broad audiences in research studies with greater ease and at lower cost. This is quite evident in the shift of survey-based research away from paper mailings towards online methods which leverage the increasing access of the general population to the Web. One component missing from many web-based survey softwares is the ability to incorporate experimental design into the survey whereby researchers can assign study participants into experimental conditions. The Institute for Research in the Social Sciences at Stanford University is seeking to improve this situation and reports early work being done in this regard, including techniques to create hybrid solutions of current survey tools with custom web-based front end systems as well as building onto already existing APIs in commercial survey systems.
