This paper examines the problem of unemployment in Nigeria. It posits that mass unemployment is a corollary of poverty in Nigeria. Therefore, if the scourge of extreme poverty and hunger were to be reduced by half in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the issue of mass unemployment has to be addressed. The paper highlights policies and programmes that have been initiated to reduce unemployment and poverty in Nigeria. It is observed that most of these programmes yielded only negative results after six years of implementation. Hence, they have become counter productive and moribund. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to identify the ways in which adult and community education provision as an evidence-based approach can make a difference. Also, the paper aims to underscore the relevance of adult and community education as the main instrument to prepare individuals for a rapidly changing, increasingly demanding world of work with particular reference to improving the employability of the Nigerians.
