Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) (PHILIPPINES)
The Master of Engineering Program of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan has been established to produce graduate engineers specialized to the application of environmental engineering and management to support the sustainable development of the region. To continually fulfill this mission, the program has periodically undergone improvements, and this paper describes the latest enhanced curriculum of the program. The current revision of the curriculum addresses several requirements, the most important is to make the research direction of the program more responsive to the nature and needs of the local industry (including government and business sectors). Higher education and industry alliances offer strong incentives to improve the latter’s competitive position by gaining access to university research facilities and staff while academic institutions can provide richer learning situations and environment to the students through the industry workplace. The curriculum enhancement also fulfills the university’s commitment as a partner in an European Union and Asialink Programme – funded project that involves the provision of open learning units on sustainable technologies to be embedded as new courses to the program or as modules for industrial training use. It also includes provisions to provide better course delivery mechanisms to facilitate on-time completion of the students enrolled and to ensure long term marketability and sustainability of the program.
