The structure
The Higher Education in Greece is divided into two sections: a) Universities and Technical Universities and b) Technological Education Institutes. They are covering the entire spectrum of scientific subjects and are located throughout the country. There are 20 Universities; 2 Technical Universities and 16 Technological Education Institutes.
The Higher Education Institutes in Greece offer graduate, post graduate and doctoral studies. There is no tuition, apart for some post graduate programs, medical care is provided and for poorer students board and other facilities are also provided. Research is conducted under the auspices of the “Research Committee” and specialized Research Institutes.
Crisis and transformation
The Higher Education System in Greece is suffering by lack of financing, over numbered of students, lack of infrastructure, institutional irregularities etc. In order to meet these crisis factors a new transformation policy should be establishes, in a European framework.
The regional impact
Higher Education Institutes are highly dispersed in the whole country and they are cultural development for the Greek regions. The presence of the Institutes enhances a Region’s innovative capacity, entrepreneurial spirit and provides scientific support to Local Authorities. Education Institutes as well as those associated with them (professors, students, and administrative staff) provide an important stimulus to the local economies of the Regions where they are located.
