In recent years, there has been a great diffusion of the Internet and other technological means within society. The school cannot alienate itself from this technological emergence since it embraces the so called net generation (Tappscott, 2007), which results from the interaction between everyday life and technology, leading to new ways of learning and regarding life. As we believe that new technologies should be articulated with new paradigms and new methodologies, we agree with Tappscott’s statement “the schools can become a place to learn, rather than a place to teach” (p. 7).
On the other hand, it is becoming more difficult to recognise the reading and writing problems in the mother language, concerning not only students’ academic life but also their personal and social life. Therefore it is most urgent to motivate students and help them develop these skills.
We analyzed many online websites in Portuguese with the purpose to develop reading and writing skills and they were meant for adults or teenagers mainly; no website was found intended to develop the writing skills of the younger age ranges.
For that reason, trying to conciliate these two thematics, ICT and writing, and to promote reading and creative writing we created the online project Riscos e Rabiscos (available at http://www.riscoserabiscos.pt.la/). Initially, this project targeted children, more precisely primary and secondary school students; bearing in mind the continuity of the learning process, we chose to open the project to every age range.
With the creation of this tool, we intend to help teachers, childcare workers and the general community to develop creativity, reading and writing in an interdisciplinary way, contributing also to stimulate the use of ICT in education.
This project was developed as part of the Master in Child Studies – Information and Communication Technologies at Minho University.
In this text we present: a) site structure and functioning; b) theoretical and methodological principles underlying the site’s creation; c) site dynamisation strategies; d) investigation methodology and obtained results.
Keywords: ICT, online learning environments, creative writing, language learning.
