Our society is marked by fast and constant changes, mostly due to technological innovations, affecting an area as wide, transversal and important as Education.
As the constructive and innovative perspective becomes more and more important in our school routine, we think, as many specialists, that using ICT allows the students a simultaneously significant, consistent, playful and interactive learning; it favours the respect for the various social-cultural identities as well. This is also the case of the Portuguese Language and Culture courses taught abroad at primary school level.
The blog Nova Era Lusitana, available at www.novaeralusitana.blogs.sapo.pt, appeared within this context, focused on writing, reading and oral communication activities. To develop these linguistic skills we also used educative software and video.
The blog worked as a pedagogical strategy for the Portuguese Language and Culture learning, as well as an educative application, since other community elements, both in France and Portugal, could take information and materials from it.
The project, part of the Master in Child Studies – Information and Communication Technologies, studies ICT’s contribution to the teaching of Portuguese abroad. This is a qualitative study, specifically the case study, as the data collecting focuses on the participant observation, on the work done and on the comments made by students, parents and other elements of the educative community.
The field work covered the school year 2006/2007 in two classes of the 4th grade at the Collège du Martinett in Rolle and at the Collège de la Burtignière in Morges, both in the French-speaking Swiss canton of Vaud.
The results emphasise the ICT’s contribution to the teaching – learning process of Portuguese Language and Culture abroad, namely : a) in the development of linguistic skills in Portuguese language; b) in the sense of autonomy and collaboration spirit; c) in the interactivity of children with a large Portuguese language community.
The blog expanded during the current school year and the evolution of this work, since we observed that the ICT used in the teaching – learning process of Portuguese Language and Culture abroad can be an important contribution for the promotion of the educative and scholar success of Portuguese descendent students.
