As a part of the Language Education in the Elementary School Course, university students were required to design a language bag for elementary school-aged students to improve the children’s language and provide motivation toward education and reading. Students were instructed throughout the course on language acquisition theories and how these theories were to be carried out in practice. Throughout the course, the influence of reading aloud, drawing, songs and lyrics, internet and media, theatre, authentic materials, etc., were explained. In addition, the concept of service learning was introduced and its importance was explained along with the course outline. A class of 23 students were given a choice to participate in a project where specific course outcomes were designed to meet community needs. The whole class agreed to participate, and CLAB was born and used creatively in a children’s hospital.
This article reflects the class experience of service learning on university students and invites teachers at all levels to make use of content to improve student’s perception of education and life. As their written reflections showed, in addition to their academic skills, the service learning cycle helped the students realize a greater sense of self, develop a partnership with society, and improve communication skills throughout discussions and language activities.
