THE USE OF INFORMATION RESOURCES BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT A CAPE TOWN PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION

Effective use of information centre resources can significantly enhance research and learning outcomes in Private Higher Education Institutions. This study explored how first-year undergraduate students at a Cape Town campus access, evaluate, and use both physical and digital information resources to support their academic work. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected via an online questionnaire with open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. Findings revealed that while most participants frequently consulted their prescribed and recommended textbooks, other valuable resources within the information centre were notably underutilized. Many students expressed a strong preference for online resources, with Google being the most commonly used search engine. The study underscores the essential role of academic libraries in promoting effective information use and calls attention to the need for structured information literacy programs. Key recommendations include customized library orientation sessions, continuous support. through targeted workshops and embedding information literacy into the academic curriculum. Future research should investigate the measurable impact of information literacy interventions on students' academic performance and engagement with library services.
