The incorporation of sustainability criteria into traditional sectors presents new challenges for business management. Within the framework of the Master's in Business Administration for Sustainability program at ESCA Santo Tomás of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) from Mexico, a research project is developed, focused on the Mexican jewelry industry, with an emphasis on silver production by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME). This study arises from the need to align the sector’s production processes with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in terms of responsible consumption, social responsibility, and environmental respect.
The objective of this study was to propose a sustainable production model based on the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), adapted to the characteristics and realities of the national jewelry sector. The methodology involved a review of scientific and specialized literature, consulting database such as Scopus and Web of Science, as well as reports from international organizations and case studies of leading companies.
The results reveal that, although there is a growing interest in adopting sustainable practices, significant challenges remain regarding input traceability, compliance with ethical and environmental standards, and process digitalization. Based on this analysis, a model, that integrates responsible practices, an efficient use of resources, a community engagement and alignment with the SDGs, was designed; in addition, the incorporation of environmental education workshops is sought, mainly in schools and silversmith communities, with the aim of reinforcing the promotion of environmental balance among the inhabitants of the municipality of Taxco, Guerrero.
This proposal aims to strengthen the competitiveness of jewelry SMEs while promoting their transition toward a fairer and more environmental conscious economy.
