Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been progressively integrated into the Mexican educational environment, especially on higher education level, by digital platforms, virtual assistants, and tools such as ChatGPT. Although this technology offers major advantages for self-directed learning, it also faces significant challenges: inequality in digital access, lack of specialized teacher training, and ethical concerns related to plagiarism and the decline of essential skills.
AI represents both an opportunity to improve education and a challenge that requires regulation, training, and appropriate institutional strategies.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence tools on higher education in Mexico, acknowledging their benefits and challenges to propose strategies that promote their responsible and effective integration, using a qualitative methodology and applying a random sampling technique.
To collect data, surveys were carried out involving both students and academic staff, based on a random sample of approximately 110 participants. The instruments included multiple-choice questions and rating scales, aimed at exploring the frequency of use of AI-based tools, their main applications in academic settings, and the level of understanding students have about their implications. Data were collected throughout the academic term running from February to July.
From the analysis of the results, several findings emerged that show a noticeable improvement in study techniques and problem-solving efficiency, directly related to the use of various AI tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Midjourney. At the same time, significant challenges were identified for educational institutions, which must embrace a paradigm shift focused on promoting the responsible and ethical application of these technologies. This educational transformation seeks to promote the integrated development of key literacies while adhering to ethical standards related to copyright and intellectual property.
