ENHANCING THE INTERNATIONAL PROFILE AND APPEAL OF MEDICAL DOCTOR PROGRAMS THROUGH STRATEGIC PLANNING: A CASE STUDY OF TBILISI STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is an autonomous higher education institution with a century-long history that remains as the main hub of medical education in Georgia. At TSMU, teaching and research in the field of fundamental and clinical sciences are carried out in Georgian, English, and Russian languages at bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and postgraduate programs, as well as professional education programs with the participation of citizens of Georgia and representatives of more than 80 countries. Study programs consist of the core components necessary for competitive international medical education: specialized academic knowledge, information management, clinical thinking, and practical and communication skills. TSMU possesses and performs educational and research projects at 5 University Clinics and has partnerships with more than a hundred hospitals, clinics, health centers, and is affiliated with more than 30 health-related organizations and institutions within the country.

Since 2013, the American MD Program (Doctor of Medicine Degree Program) has been functioning at TSMU. The program was developed and implemented based on a joint project between TSMU and Emory University School of Medicine (ESOM, Atlanta, USA).

Annually, Tbilisi State Medical University invites professors from the European Union, the USA, Great Britain, Israel, Turkey, and other countries to conduct lectures, practical classes, demonstration surgeries, and patient consultations. TSMU cooperates with more than 40 universities and centers around the world; through joint scientific contacts, it has given the opportunity to participate in important international and national research projects. The number of foreign students at Tbilisi State Medical University is growing every year. Currently, more than 3,500 foreign students from 84 countries are studying at TSMU.

The article discusses the administrative services and resources provided to Foster University’s competitiveness in the global market, assured by:
Strengthening internationalization of teaching, learning, and research:
- Engaging foreign professors, clinical professors, and researchers as academic staff of the university;
- Ensuring the participation of foreign partners in international educational and research programs;
- Developing and implementing joint and dual educational programs;
- Increasing the international mobility of students, teachers and administrative personnel, and researchers

Improving the quality of educational activities by implementation:
- of new methods of teaching, learning, and assessment (Workplace-Based Assessment (WPBA) methods - CBD, MiniCEX, DOPS, MSF, Flipped Classroom, Portfolio), implementation of Entrusted Professional Activities (EPA) under the guidance of foreign consultants;
- of PBL and TBL methods at the basic and preclinical stages of training;
- of new methods of teaching and assessment

Retraining of teachers in the field of medical education methodology:
- Developing new programs and training on the methodology of medical education (portfolio, PBL, EPA, application of artificial intelligence);
- Conducting ESME courses and training on the modern methodology of medical education by foreign specialists at the International Training Center AMEE;
- Ensuring continuous professional development of teachers
- Modernizing existing and developing new continuous professional development programs
