Leisure activities are fundamental to the overall development, emotional well-being, and social integration of children, including those with mild intellectual disabilities. Engaging in diverse leisure activities can enhance autonomy, foster social skills, and improve cognitive and emotional development. However, children with mild intellectual disabilities often face significant obstacles in accessing such opportunities due to a combination of environmental, social, and economic barriers. This qualitative study aims to explore the types of leisure activities that school-aged children with mild intellectual disabilities participate in, the extent of family involvement in facilitating these activities, and the suggestions parents have for enhancing leisure opportunities in their local communities. The research employed semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 30 parents (15 mothers and 15 fathers) of 15 children aged 6 to 12 years diagnosed with mild intellectual disabilities in Greece. The interviews sought to capture a comprehensive understanding of leisure patterns, shared family experiences, and systemic challenges. Thematic analysis of the data revealed a predominance of home-based and passive activities, limited participation in community-based programs, and multiple barriers, including a lack of inclusive facilities, financial limitations, and insufficient professional support. Parents expressed a strong desire for structured, affordable, and inclusive leisure programs that can provide socialization opportunities and skill development for their children. The findings point out the importance of public policies, community initiatives, and educational partnerships that can support the creation of accessible leisure programs. Such interventions are essential not only for the personal growth of children with mild intellectual disabilities but also for enhancing their social participation and inclusion within the broader community.
