UNIQUE PLAYFUL AND JOYFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG LEARNERS
M. Curenton-Jolly
Boston University (UNITED STATES)
The purpose of this session is to introduce the research base undergirding an early childhood educator coaching model called "Unique Playful and Joyful Opportunities for Young Learners (UPJOY)." This UPJOY coaching model is unique from other early childhood coaching models being offered within the United States because it is grounded in the principles of mindful movement, play, and trauma-sensitivity. The goal of the coaching is to improve teachers classroom interactions with young learners (age 4-8) to make them more equitable and culturally responsive. The coaching model is also unique because it is data-driven in that the educators are observed with the Assessing Classroom Sociocultural Equity Scale (ACSES), and given feedback about their instructional interactions according to this research-based observation tool. Within the session, the presenter will (1) present the research related to the model, (2) share the key features of the model and examples of how it is being used, and (3) share materials and strategies for others to incorporate the ACSES or the UPJOY Model.
