Background:
The Institute of Health Promotion and Education (IHPE) is a registered charity and a recognised professional association providing membership, continuing professional development and educational course recognition (https://ihpe.org.uk). The IHPE has a long history of advocating for positive health, preventing ill health, and reducing inequalities. Our work is based on the principles of health promotion as set out in the World Health Organization’s ‘Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion’ and other key documents.

Approach:
The IHPE Manifesto was launched in 2024. It includes 10 recommendations which are identified as key priorities for addressing health challenges across the lifespan:
(1) reduce inequalities,
(2) prioritise the health of children,
(3) support the creation of ‘health promoting settings’,
(4) help people to increase control over, and to improve, their health,
(5) increase the focus on positive mental health,
(6) provide conditions for improved physical health,
(7) advocate on important but under highlighted and poorly resourced issues,
(8) create politically independent national organisations to drive forward improvements in health,
(9) implement a cross-sector approach to public health,
(10) increase the use of positive health indicators.

Masterclass Series 2025:
In partnership with the University of Nottingham in the UK, the IHPE launched a Masterclass Series, hosted by the lead author, (an IHPE Trustee), offering 2,500 registration places for continuing professional development. This includes 5 sessions, focusing on:
(i) physical activity engagement through ‘parkruns’,
(ii) mental health promotion in the workplace,
(iii) obesity in children and adolescents,
(iv) brief interventions for health promotion in urgent and emergency care relating to alcohol misuse, and
(v) breast cancer prevention, treatment and care.
Each session is mapped to the recommendations described in the IHPE Manifesto, and includes a presentation delivered by one or more high profile topic experts, followed by an interactive ‘question and answer’ session.

Evaluation and reflection:
Evaluation takes the form of an online feedback survey with free text qualitative responses. Attendees provide a rating (0-5 scale) and respond to 4 closed-item questions relating to their perceptions of whether the session is relevant to their work or studies, whether they learned something new, whether they would recommend the session to others, and whether they would attend a future IHPE event. Open-ended items allow for feedback comments. In the initial evaluation, 91% rated the session 5 stars, 97% indicated it was relevant to their work or studies, 100% learned something new, 100% would recommend the session to others, 97% would attend another IHPE event. Attendees referred to ‘world-leading speakers’, ‘interactivity’, ‘new learning’, ‘audience engagement’, ‘networking opportunities’, and ‘positive public health action’. Driscoll's What Model (Driscoll, 2007) is being used to analyse and learn from experiences and plan future events.

Conclusion:
Through the Masterclass Series, IHPE implements its manifesto and demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning in public health and health promotion which is ‘impact oriented’. Attendees increase knowledge and skills, and research-informed practice is facilitated. Certificates of attendance can support individuals’ professional portfolios and contribute to career development.
