Maternity presents a significant, challenge for university students globally, frequently leading to academic disruption and withdrawal. This study investigates the challenges faced by student mothers within a Mexican context. The objective of this research is to explore and analyze the specific obstacles encountered by women pursuing higher education while experiencing early motherhood, and to understand the impact of these challenges on their academic continuity. Utilizing a nonexperimental cross sectional with a mixed methodological approach, this study employs an interpretative phenomenological analysis to delve into the lived experiences of the participants. The methods involved in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a sample of 20 students, aged 18 to 24, who are mothers. Participants were selected from a public Mexican university in Mexico, ensuring a focus on the specific socio-cultural and institutional dynamics of the region. The interviews explored themes such as academic performance, financial strain, social support systems, institutional responsiveness, mental and physical health, and future aspirations. Preliminary results indicate that student mothers face substantial hurdles including significant time management difficulties, discrimination, lack of adequate childcare, financial instability, and emotional distress. Many participants reported feeling isolated and unsupported by both their academic institutions and their immediate social circles. The discussion highlights the urgent need for universities to implement more comprehensive and empathetic support systems that address the unique needs of this vulnerable student population. This includes flexible academic policies, accessible childcare options, psychological counseling, and financial aid. The findings suggest that the existing institutional frameworks often fail to adequately accommodate the realities of student mothers, thereby compromising their right to education and future professional development. In conclusion, maternity undeniably poses a considerable challenge to the academic progression of young women in Mexican universities. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from educational institutions, policymakers, and society at large to create more inclusive and supportive environments that enable student mothers to successfully balance their academic aspirations with their parental responsibilities, ultimately fostering greater educational equity.
