This paper presents a pedagogical proposal developed in the first-year Drawing course of the Graphic Design BA program at the School of Design (ESD), Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (IPCA).

The scope and the goals of this drawing class are for the students to acquire observation and representation skills, as well as drawing processes that apply to creative and critical thinking. One of the focuses of this class is the study of the human figure, through the analysis of proportions, scale and anatomical studies of the body. Following the study of the human figure, the students were introduced to character design. Through this coursework exercise, the students were tasked with developing a character design based on a description of a form by another student.

This case study analyzes the fundamental aspects of the practice of teaching drawing in the following ways: Firstly, a reflection on the organization and objectives of this exercise. Next, a look into the various methodologies applied by the students as they sought to understand and create a character out of the described form. Lastly, the analysis of the student’s key moments of learning throughout the work process, with the collection of their feedback as well as the student’s work.

This exercise’s process of ideating, sketching, and designing the drawings show that, although it is an introductory exercise to character design, it is possible to understand fundamental concepts about visual and creative representation, the volumetric and spatial dimension of a body in the construction of a character and the context of character design in relation to drawing as a practice. The whole process indicates the importance of studying aspects of drawing relating to the expression, pose, and dynamics of a form highlighting its peculiar characteristics, to develop creative thinking and visual communication skills.
