DANCING TOGETHER – HOW EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CAN ENHANCE THE LEARNING EFFECTS OF COLLABORATIVE WORK

Pedagogical practices are essential for achieving higher learning aims for Higher Educational Institutions (HE) students. The introduction of Educational Technology (EdTech) and the tremendous advancement we have seen in available hardware and software throughout the last two decades have made it even more critical with sound pedagogy and more challenging to utilize the new and innovative technology pedagogically.

In the EU-co-funded project Learning Through Innovative Collaboration Enhanced by Educational Technology (iLikeIT2), the consortium consisting of partners from Norway, UK, Spain, Greece, and Italy, researched the effects of implementing a new and innovative response tool designed for collaborative learning in HE classrooms. The project developed a software based on desktop research and piloted software and methodology in real-life scenarios. The iLikeIT2 project conclude with the design of a methodology for using the software iLikeIT2 in a classroom, hybrid, or online in HE.

This paper summarizes the result and describes the effects of the applied software and related developed methodology in the previous stages of the project. Furthermore, it provides insight into how to design and program pedagogically sound software to achieve better student learning experiences when using EdTech in a collaborative setting.

The paper will conclude by answering the research questions: In what way does specially designed software aid learning in a collaborative way in HE? Results obtained throughout the project show how the three C’s, Communication, Collaboration, and Coordination, are drivers for enhancing collaborative work, where coordination is emphasized, especially when introducing Ed.Tech. It is shown that instructors are likely to neglect some of the classical important components when using EdTech in collaboration and that the tools provided provide some pedagogical advantages that mitigate the lack of physical presence in the group. When one can utilize strengths in the software applied, how we dance in an academic setting will always improve.
