This paper proposes an innovative approach to teaching introductory statistics using Microsoft Excel while eliminating traditional note-taking during class. The method requires students to focus entirely on the screen during demonstrations, with all materials provided digitally post-session. This approach enhances engagement, improves software proficiency, and reduces cognitive load by eliminating the split-attention effect common in traditional statistics instruction.
Statistics and Engineering education faces unique challenges as students must simultaneously learn conceptual foundations and practical software skills. Traditional methods that combine lecture, note-taking, and software demonstration often lead to cognitive overload. This paper presents a pedagogical framework where students engage in screen-only focus during Excel demonstrations and all instructional materials are provided digitally after class. Also, in this pedagogical approach, classroom time emphasizes active watching and immediate application.
