This paper presents an action research project that investigates the pedagogical impact of animated cartoons in formal education, focusing on the Croatian cultural icon Professor Balthazar. Developed by the Association Professor Balthazar, this initiative uses a cartoon-based approach to enrich STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education in primary and secondary schools.
At the core of this research is a newly designed methodological manual that provides teachers with a comprehensive pedagogical framework for integrating cartoons into everyday lessons. Grounded in Bloom’s Taxonomy, Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and constructivist principles, the manual translates theoretical insights into practical classroom strategies. It guides teachers in using cartoons for microlearning, critical thinking, collaborative activities, problem-solving tasks and creative expression. Special attention is given to managing diverse learning styles and using mobile technologies and social media to boost motivation and reach Generation Z learners.
Currently, this method is being piloted in ten Croatian counties with over 70 teachers and 1,400 students. The study applies mixed methods: quantitative data (grades, attendance, progression) combined with qualitative feedback (surveys, focus groups) to assess how the cartoon-based method influences engagement, retention and skills development. Early results indicate that familiar, culturally relevant animated content can significantly increase students’ motivation, language skills, and STREAM-related curiosity.
This presentation will share the pedagogical manual, research design and preliminary findings, offering practical insights for teachers and policymakers. It argues that systematic use of animated content can become an effective, scalable pedagogical innovation that combines entertainment and education. By blending tradition and new media, the Professor Balthazar method provides a transferable model to help schools tackle early school leaving and strengthen 21st-century skills.
