This study is one of the first to investigate attitudes towards artificial intelligence (AI) by sampling an entire university - academics, students, and professional staff. An online questionnaire was advertised to participants via email, forums and posters. It consisted of 43 demographic items and Likert scales which were analyzed using SPSS. Aggregated results showed both positive and negative attitudes to AI tools. The attitude scale results also indicated that experience with AI leads to higher optimism about the technology with lesser experience leading to higher pessimism. These findings reveal unacknowledged information about how individuals engage with emerging AI technologies within the university context. Further research is needed to explore the implications for policy development, ethical considerations, and effective communication strategies surrounding AI.
