A NEW INITIATIVE FOR A GIRLS' SCHOOL IN KIBERA, KENYA, TO IMPROVE MATH EDUCATION OUTCOMES

The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy is a privately funded secondary school in the heart of Kibera, one of the largest slums on the African continent. Founded in 2006 as the first free girls secondary school in Kenya and Kibera, the school provides boarding and education to roughly 120 girls in grades 10-12. The girls in the school have traditionally struggled in the STEM disciplines, typically scoring below expectations on the Kenyan standardized exams at the conclusion of secondary school. An effort was initiated several years ago to introduce engineering projects to the girls as a means of connecting the Maths and science course materials to activities that they can touch, see, and connect with. The hope was that this would produce better overall performance in the STEM studies. While the full impact of these introduced activities cannot yet be determined, the concern at the school is that performance in Maths, in particular, is still lagging. In 2026, a new initiative will be introduced to augment the engineering project activities, including new strategies for the Maths teachers and a more guided inquiry approach to student learning. A discussion of the project activities as well as a detailed plan for the addition of the new math-specific initiative is presented.
