PLUS D'UNE LANGUE! MORE THAN ONE LANGUAGE
S. Kern, J.L. Vidalenc
Lyon 2 (FRANCE)
The project consists in developing a scientific and cultural mediation tool for educators and parents of young children on the theme of parenting in a multilingual context. The device take the form of a box containing 16 cards depicting children in various multilingual situations and a booklet designed to help professionals support parents in a harmonious multilingual project (https://digipad.app/p/586706/9e2095674c6be)

Description of the social valorization and/or training project:
Theoretical framework and background to the project
Today in France, around 20% of children grow up with more than one language. In priority neighborhoods (urban policy areas), up to 80% of children live in a plurilingual context. Despite this reality, the specific nature of language socialization—based on one or sometimes two family languages different from the societal language—receives little attention. Yet, the way in which linguistic diversity is acknowledged and supported by parents and professionals has a significant impact: it can either enhance or hinder a child’s multilingual development, compared to a traditional monolingual approach.
To foster awareness and promote the benefits and conditions of harmonious plurilingual development3 , the idea of developing mediation actions in “early childhood” educational structures led us to formalize the project we are submitting for communication.

Material:
The material consists of 16 cards and a complementary booklet. Each of these materials describes language practices in a multilingual environment with which users may identify. The goal is to support parents in their language choices and to highlight those practices that are most beneficial for children's linguistic development and overall well-being. These resources are also available on a publicly accessible website.

Escompted results and practical impacts and/or expected valorisation:
The project targets both early childhood professionals and parents. For parents, the goal is for them to feel acknowledged in the complexity of parenting in a multilingual context, to better understand the role and place of each language in their child's development, and feel reassured about the legitimacy and importance of the family language in both school and in learning French. For professionals, the aim is to develop a better understanding of how languages are organized around the child, by gathering and listening to the situations raised by families; to acquire a knowledge base provided by the mediator; to develop mediation gestures and postures towards parents and children, to be applied daily in their professional context.
