INTERNATIONALIZING THE CURRICULUM IN SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW DEGREES: A SCALABLE PROTOCOL FOR UNIVERSITY MOBILITY AND GLOBAL COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT

In a globalized world, fostering international experiences among university students is essential not only to enhance their employability, but also to promote values such as intercultural understanding, adaptability, and global citizenship. However, many social science programs still show limited participation in international mobility schemes, often due to fragmented institutional approaches or a lack of information among students. This educational innovation project, developed at Universitat Jaume I (Spain), addresses this challenge through a replicable and coordinated protocol that integrates various international mobility opportunities into a coherent and accessible curricular pathway.

The project targets over 2,500 students from five undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Law and Economics and aims to align the management of study and internship mobility programs within the Erasmus+ framework. Through a set of coordinated actions, the initiative improves communication, raises awareness, and promotes participation in both mobility modalities.

One of the main outcomes of the project is the development of a visual and operational protocol, including infographics, curricular maps, and personalized guidance tool, that supports students in navigating their internationalization options from the first year. The protocol is grounded in a data-driven diagnosis of students’ initial competencies and interests, a joint analysis of study and internship mobility offerings, and close coordination between academic staff and international relations offices.

This presentation outlines the project’s methodology, main outcomes, and alignment with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It also shares the lessons learned during the pilot phase and proposes this model as a flexible and transferable tool for other institutions seeking to enhance the internationalization of their undergraduate programs.

By providing a structured yet adaptable roadmap, the project contributes to consolidating an institutional culture of internationalization and equity in access to global learning opportunities, and encourages other universities to implement similar approaches tailored to their own contexts.
