The integration of AI into education has the potential to revolutionize teaching methodologies, making it essential to explore its possibilities. This communication presents the online teacher training course developed within the framework of the international PAIDEIA project, which aims to equip primary and secondary school teachers with the skills to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in an ethical, critical, and pedagogical way in their teaching practices.
Starting with an initial research phase focused on the needs of teachers and an analysis of current digital competence frameworks for educators across various European countries, a tailored training proposal has been designed. This proposal will be described and exemplified during the presentation. In this context, the project has developed activities that equip teachers with the competencies needed to understand, apply, and manage the characteristics and potential of AI in education broadly—and more specifically in bilingual education and language teaching. These include, but are not limited to: personalized learning through adaptive activities; the creation of automated assessment tools that provide immediate feedback; and ongoing professional development opportunities, enabling teachers to access materials that support the effective integration of AI into their pedagogical practices while addressing the ethical challenges it entails.
The communication aims to share the project’s training approach, which is aligned with European priorities for digital education and focused on strengthening the role of teachers as key agents in the technological transformation of education. Importantly, the teacher training programme developed within PAIDEIA will be made freely available to interested educators once finalized, ensuring open access to the resources and supporting a broad uptake across schools.
