This article presents a project carried out at a Singular Educational Center to bring the educational institution closer to the neighborhood and its inhabitants. The tool used to develop the collaborative project is the radio medium.
Radio is a classic communication medium, rarely used as a didactic resource despite its great educational potential. It allows working on curricular content and key competencies in an engaging, interdisciplinary, and open way. It is a dynamic medium that promotes communication, facilitates reading and text comprehension, and motivates students to write. The use of podcasts and new technologies has allowed this medium to adapt perfectly to the new forms of exploiting different educational methodologies in the school environment.
This project arises as a result of a series of basic shortcomings and needs identified among the students of a school located in a neighborhood classified as a BAP (Preferred Action Neighborhood) and therefore with students requiring Inequality Compensation, which act as barriers preventing daily development at the center. Moreover, this situation classifies the school as a Singular Educational Center, a place of special difficulty, also registered by the Regional Ministry as a center of difficult provision.
The uniqueness of our center's environment unfortunately means that families are often reluctant to participate in the daily life of the school. Despite the efforts made, it had not previously been possible to get them involved and make them aware of the projects carried out by our students.
With this project, we managed to bring information from the center to the neighborhood, achieving a significant impact on students and their families. On the one hand, the students are delighted to showcase what they do at the center and present it to the rest of society. On the other hand, families are more aware of everything the center offers their children, increasing their involvement in the center’s activities and reducing school absenteeism.
Moreover, family participation in the center reduces disruptive actions, improves coexistence in the school and the neighborhood, and helps identify the needs of our environment to improve it.
