MICROPATH: EMPOWERING EDUCATORS TO DESIGN AND DELIVER MICRO-CREDENTIALS

South East Technological University (IRELAND)
MicroPath is a cross-campus initiative at South East Technological University (SETU) aimed at building capacity among academic and support staff to design and deliver quality-assured micro-credentials. Responding to growing demand for flexible, skills-focused learning pathways, MicroPath provides participants with a structured, practice-based professional development opportunity worth 2.5 ECTS.

The micro-credential introduces foundational concepts in micro-credentials, instructional design, digital tools, and resource evaluation, culminating in a collaborative design sprint using the Carpe Diem methodology. The course is underpinned by Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and incorporates current digital technologies to support inclusive, learner-centred design.

Key outputs will include a fully online or blended Creative Commons-licensed micro-credential, adaptable across different LMS platforms, and a project report capturing lessons learned and feedback from participants. Pilot delivery, peer review, and participant reflection will ensure the course is practical, relevant, and sustainable.

Aligned with SETU’s strategic priorities in lifelong learning and digital transformation, MicroPath supports wider institutional goals and offers a scalable model for future CPD. The project also contributes to sector-wide efforts to embed micro-credential provision across higher education, with potential for national dissemination and collaboration.

Keywords: Micro-credentials, education, technology, online, blended.
