BIM IMPLEMENTATION IN A UNIVERSITY CIVIL ENGINEER MASTER CLASS
A. Sampaio
University of Lisbon (PORTUGAL)
Education in Civil Engineering has been introducing the work methodology, currently most used in the Construction industry, Building Information Modelling (BIM), through different curricular strategies at the level of the last school year (master's degree). Learning the new methodology requires the transmission of theoretical concepts and the practical development of geometric and physical models using BIM software with advanced modelling technology. The curriculum begins with the generation of a building digital BIM model, composed of parametric objects. Then, by handling the model database, different followed steps, each are usually required are elaborated, in order to complement the building design. Activities related to the analysis of collisions between disciplines, the planning of the construction process, the cost estimates of the building and the sustainability study are developed. The course transmits in an evolutionary and sequential way the learning necessary to instil in finalist students the BIM skills required in their future professional activity as a civil engineer.
