Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (ROMANIA)
After three years of discussions and preparations made by their teachers, first-year architecture students from Cluj-Napoca and Zwolle met in a common design project of seven weeks, in the spring of 2024. Their task was to design a group of nine small houses for international visiting students on a site near the Romanian faculty campus. The project was planned in a blended format with two onsite meetings in Cluj and Zwolle and an online phase of five weeks in between. Students worked in groups of two people and were guided by four Dutch and Romanian teachers. The aim of this exchange was to encourage intercultural cooperation while also proving that architecture is a common language for students of the two schools. Designing the task, adjusting the schedules, setting up the mutual visits and the timetable for the online tutoring took a lot of time and planning and taught the tutors valuable lessons. The article presents the process of designing this exchange program, its development and the student results. It focuses on the challenges encountered in the process while analyzing both the positive and negative aspects of the experience.
