Expanding the Art Song Canon Studied By Undergraduate Voice Students in North America is an ethnomusicological study examining ways to help ensure that students are exposed to a comprehensive study of vocal repertoire with depth and breadth. In our roles as teachers, researchers, and performers instructing undergraduate singers in academic institutions, we are responsible for the teaching and dissemination of vocal works. As music educators, fostering students’ vocal development and growth - along with exposing them to an eclectic range of music by multiple composers is essential. Additionally, we must continuously re-examine our perceptions of excellence in classical vocal music. In the quest to expand the vocal canon for our 21st century students and future educators, it is important that students are exposed to the works of Western European composers given this historical knowledge of literature is essential. However, educators committed to making meaningful contributions to vocal studies may wish to continue to broaden their perspectives. This broadening can aid in fostering a learning environment whereby students learn, research, and perform the works of composers from a broad range of backgrounds. And further, provide a framework of instruction dedicated to equally disseminating vocal works of varied languages from an evolving collection of composers of varied eras and backgrounds. This supports and fosters well-rounded musical education, and vocal study.

This ethnomusicological study examines and compiles a cross-section of vocal works often studied by undergraduate music students in North America. The study offers expanded resources for music educators framed within modern singing pedagogy, to complement frequently studied repertoire selections in voice studios. By incorporating a broader selection of musical works, the study and research aims to foster greater depth and breadth in students' musical knowledge and in vocal literature.
