Generative AI offers exciting opportunities in engineering education, but several challenges need to be addressed to fully realize its potential. Generative AI models can generate reliable but inaccurate answers. This can be particularly problematic in engineering education, where accuracy is critical.
This study examines the integration of generative artificial intelligence, specifically chatbot technologies, into engineering education to enhance the learning experience while addressing accuracy and pedagogical integrity. Although generative AI has great potential, its use in fields that require high accuracy, such as engineering, requires careful implementation. This case explored how chatbots developed using the Chatbase tool can help students acquire reliable and relevant knowledge. Using a structured methodology that encompasses the development and implementation of educational chatbots, the study evaluates their effectiveness from both the student and the educator perspectives.
A case study of the integration of a chatbot into a course ‘IT Project Management’ provides practical insights into the implementation, including benefits, challenges, and student feedback. The results show that well-designed chatbots can improve accessibility, support personalized learning, and provide 24/7 support. However, they must be carefully managed to ensure factual precision and meaningful engagement. The findings highlight the importance of aligning AI tools with curriculum objectives, developing adaptability, and continually updating content to maintain relevance.
