THE PROBLEM OF NON-ATTENDANCE IN UNIVERSITY CLASSES: ANALYSIS OF CAUSES AND ACTION PLANS
P. Jarne-Muñoz, A. Hernández-Trasobares, R. Hermoso-Traba
Absenteeism in classrooms is an important issue for higher education programmes, probably increased as a result of the pandemic caused by Covid-19. Due to the increasing incidence of this circumstance in our classes, it is necessary to examine in depth the causes that explain the growing student disengagement, for which it will be necessary to have into account their opinions and their vision of the problem. In this way, once the possible causes of absenteeism are identified, universities in general, and centres in particular, can implement appropriate measures to encourage students to attend lectures.
The main objective of the paper is to identify the main causes of student absenteeism in the classes, so as possible lines of action and improvement can be proposed to increase student attendance in the classroom.
In order to achieve this objective, the research was carried out in the Bachelor's Degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources at the University of Zaragoza. To this end, a survey was prepared using Google Forms software, sent to students in all four years of the degree, and considering both morning and afternoon groups. In order to achieve a greater precision in the study, the survey consists of both open and closed questions, identifying the level of student attendance, as well as the possible causes of absenteeism, considering factors such as the teaching staff behaviour, the subject, the student's personal situation, the academic organisation of the degree and other possible factors.
The results of the study contribute to the acquisition of a better understanding of the circumstances, conditions and motivations behind the existence of a high level of absenteeism. This will make it possible to establish lines and proposals for action to improve student engagement, increasing their level of attendance and contributing to the achievement of a suitable quality education. These lines of action will not only be applicable to the Degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources of the University of Zaragoza, but can also be applied to other degrees and/or universities.
