ENHANCING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING THROUGH GAMIFICATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: A PEDAGOGICAL PROPOSAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INSIGHTS
R. Coutinho1, M. Antonio Placucci2
The integration of gamification and artificial intelligence (AI) in education has emerged as a powerful pedagogical strategy, especially in the context of English language instruction. This article presents a structured proposal that combines AI-driven tools with gamified activities to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes. The study was conducted in a high school setting, where students participated in English classes using a custom platform integrating quizzes, vocabulary challenges, and real-time pronunciation feedback, all supported by adaptive AI technologies.
The methodology involved the implementation of these tools across two academic terms with comparative analysis between control and experimental groups. Gamified elements such as badges, point systems, and progress bars were aligned with curricular goals and personalized through AI algorithms based on each student’s performance. Teachers used analytics dashboards to track learner progress and adjust content in real time. Student participation, motivation, and language retention were evaluated through qualitative surveys and performance assessments.
Preliminary results indicate a significant increase in student engagement, with reported improvements in vocabulary acquisition, grammatical accuracy, and oral fluency. Teachers also reported greater flexibility in classroom management and more accurate identification of individual learning needs. The integration of AI not only provided instant feedback to students, but also facilitated differentiated instruction without increasing teacher workload.
In conclusion, this research demonstrates the potential of combining gamification and AI as a practical and scalable approach to modernize English language instruction. Despite challenges related to infrastructure and teacher training, the study reinforces the importance of innovative and inclusive strategies in education. The article presents key teaching tools and strategies that support more creative, adaptive, and student-centered English language learning environments.
