This article focuses on students' experiences in developing a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project that incorporates the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to enhance students' proposed ideas, boosting their creativity during the initial stage of the design process. The project aimed to design low-cost, ready-to-assemble modular products. These products were conceived with specific constraints, as all parts had to be made of plywood panels and assembled using 3D-printed pieces to facilitate prototyping and manufacturing in various contexts.

The project was conducted with a group of students from the Design Bachelor's program at Tec de Monterrey, and design students at Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany. This educational experience provided students with a platform to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, allowing them to develop skills in AI-assisted design and digital fabrication. Throughout the project, several aspects were evaluated, including intercultural collaboration, technology integration, and the feasibility of the developed prototypes.

The results reflect the students' ability to innovate and adapt to the demands of a global and technologically advanced learning environment. The project highlighted the students' capacity to integrate AI tools effectively and work collaboratively across cultural boundaries. Additionally, the feasibility of the prototypes was assessed, revealing that the constraints provided a meaningful framework for innovative design solutions. The study concludes that the integration of AI in the design process significantly boosted students' creativity and innovation. The intercultural aspect of the project enriched the students' learning experience, as they faced and overcame various challenges to achieve success. The findings suggest that such collaborative projects are valuable in preparing students for the complexities of the modern design landscape, where technology and global collaboration are increasingly important.
