This research presents an innovative approach to distance learning for engineering students by designing and implementing virtual and augmented reality lessons within virtual laboratories. Aligned with the TEC21 educational model of Tecnologico de Monterrey, this initiative leverages challenge-based learning in collaboration with industry partners, termed 'formative partners,' to address real-world problem-solving. The CowTEC Platform and the TEC21 Auto Assembly Plant are virtual formative partners, enabling faculty to design engaging academic activities. These platforms utilize virtual reality lessons, complemented by instructional videos and documents, to facilitate student comprehension of complex industrial processes. By simulating real-world scenarios, these virtual environments provide students with data-driven experiences that reinforce theoretical knowledge.
This model facilitates remote education through virtual and augmented reality lessons, incorporating artificial intelligence to offer real-time chatbot support and predictive analytics to enhance student performance in simulations. Furthermore, it provides a structured lesson design framework for faculty. This study outlines the methodologies employed in designing virtual and augmented reality lessons, the integration of serious gamification principles, and future endeavors to extend these platforms to the broader business landscape. We propose the development of an ecosystem built on diverse educational innovations to create a modular framework for distance learning. This approach aims to provide a scalable and adaptable solution for engineering education, fostering student engagement and practical skill development in a virtual environment. The integration of cutting-edge technologies and pedagogical strategies underscores the potential for transformative distance learning experiences.
