BRINGING AI INTO HIGHER EDUCATION TEACHING: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRATION
S. Hetzner
KI-KOMP develops and implements a comprehensive curriculum for AI competence development targeted at academic teaching staff. The project focuses on enabling Higher education lectures to understand and responsibly apply AI technologies, with a special emphasis on didactic strategies and ethical considerations.
The curriculum addresses four key competence areas essential for digital teaching with AI:
1. Course and Learning Design
2. Teaching and Learning Implementation
3. Feedback and Formative Assessment
4. Learning Media Production
Key Components:
A central element of KI-KOMP is the creation of modular micro-learning units, designed as Open Access Resources. These units are accessible, flexible, and tailored to the needs of higher education teachers from diverse disciplines. Each unit presents a practical use case, demonstrating how AI tools can enhance various aspects of teaching.
Examples include:
- Developing competence-oriented learning outcomes with AI support.
- Using AI-powered tools to provide individualized, formative feedback in large-scale courses.
- Supporting the creation of multimedia learning materials through generative AI applications.
An additional resource is the Good Practice Database, featuring video portraits of currently 21 experts (but growing every month) and practitioners from different universities who are already successfully using AI in their teaching or conducting research on AI in education. These examples showcase innovative approaches, inspire other educators, and foster a growing community of practice.
Evaluation and Research:
KI-KOMP employs a systematic evaluation framework to accompany the implementation of the curriculum and its components. The evaluation aims to identify success factors and challenges for the sustainable integration of AI in higher education teaching. Special attention is paid to:
- Supporting Student Agency, by enabling more adaptive and self-directed learning through AI-supported tools.
- Addressing organizational and cultural barriers, and promoting institutional strategies, such as the development of AI guidelines and policies for teaching and learning.
Holistic Integration of AI in Higher Education:
One of the core insights of KI-KOMP is the necessity of a holistic approach to integrating AI into teaching and learning. Beyond the development of individual competencies, this includes:
- Building communities of practice to foster peer learning and innovation.
- Developing open, adaptable learning resources to ensure broad access and scalability.
- Establishing institutional frameworks, such as policies and guidelines, that provide orientation and foster responsible AI use across the institution.
KI-KOMP demonstrates how a multi-level strategy can support higher education institutions in responsibly and sustainably embedding AI in teaching practice. The project contributes to a shift towards future-ready teaching and institutional transformation, where AI is leveraged to enhance learning experiences while safeguarding academic values and student autonomy.
Relevance and Impact:
This approach addresses one of the most urgent challenges in higher education today: enabling teachers and institutions to harness the opportunities of AI without losing sight of critical, ethical, and pedagogical considerations. KI-KOMP provides transferable insights and tools that other institutions can adopt and adapt, supporting the broader mission of digital transformation in education.
