In recent years, professors' concerns have increasingly focused on developing transversal competencies throughout the Food Science and Technology (FST) degree curriculum. This process requires coordination among instructors and across subjects to ensure a gradual and integrated progression throughout the programme.
The development of transversal competencies requires continuous support for students throughout their degree, from the first to the final year. This enables them to progressively build the expected skills through experiential learning, ultimately leading to behavioral change.

During the coordination of the degree programme, difficulties have been identified in the ability of the students to select specialized and reliable information sources, as well as in adhering to fundamental referencing and bibliographic citation standards within the academic context. Additional difficulties include organizing and coherently expressing information in writing, applying spelling, grammar, and punctuation rules, and using specialized vocabulary appropriate for technical documents in the field of FST. These challenges are reflected in the preparation of undergraduate final projects, impacting both students’ autonomy during the development process and the overall quality of their work. The project developed at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) aims to enhance the acquisition of Written Communication and Bibliographic Research Skills among students in the FST degree programme. As part of this initiative, learning outcomes have been identified, and activities based on active and cooperative methodologies have been designed for gradual acquisition of the skill across the Degree, to better prepare students for their professional futures.

To monitor the progressive acquisition of these competencies, questionnaires have been designed to assess students' perceptions of their own learning. This approach helps students to become more aware of their progress in mastering the transversal competencies and to identify any challenges they may encounter, fostering their active engagement in the learning process. Additionally, the project has developed rubrics as effective tools for the objective and homogeneous assessment of the above-mentioned transversal competencies.
