ADDIE MODEL-BASED DESIGN OF AN EDUCATIONAL BREAKOUT ON LEGISLATION AS A DIGITAL RESOURCE FOR UNIVERSITY LEARNING IN THE CONTEXT OF SCHOOL ORGANIZATION WITH GENIALLY
M. MartÃn-del-Pozo
Undergraduate students enrolled in education degree programs need to be familiar with the legislation applicable to their future professional practice. They need to develop competences that allow them to effectively search for, critically analyse, and reflect on legislation. However, such topics often generate limited interest among students and can be difficult to understand due to their complexity. Furthermore, the courses most directly related to the development of these competences are offered in the first year of the Bachelor's degrees. This poses an additional challenge, as students often have limited prior knowledge of the subject. For this reason, it is important to implement pedagogical strategies that facilitate a gradual, practical, and collaborative approach to these topics, ultimately enhancing students’ motivation toward these topics.
In this context, the development of an educational breakout is proposed. The primary objective of an educational breakout is to unlock a secured box or object using various types of padlocks. To open these padlocks, participants must obtain specific codes. These codes are obtained by solving problems, quizzes, or puzzles. Challenges are embedded within a narrative and are directly linked to the learning content and competences targeted by the instructional approach. Educational breakouts offer several advantages, including fostering collaboration and teamwork, and enhancing problem-solving skills. They have been applied across a wide range of disciplines, such as sciences, geography and history. They have also been employed to facilitate the acquisition of subject-specific knowledge, including vocabulary related to art, spatial and temporal reasoning skills, and listening comprehension, among others. Educational breakouts have been implemented across various educational levels, from early childhood education to higher education.
Therefore, the development of an educational breakout in the Genially application is proposed, focusing on fundamental aspects of legislation in general and education-related legislation in particular. The ADDIE model is employed, which is a model used for instructional design and the design and development of teaching materials. The project is currently in the design phase, during which student activities and assessment methods are being designed, and the structure and sequence of content are being determined. Notably, the breakout will address key competences, such as the ability to search the Official State Gazette (in Spanish, “Boletín Oficial del Estado”, the official medium for publishing laws, provisions, and legal acts in Spain), the understanding of the concept of consolidated legislation, and distinguishing between different types of legal regulations.
In conclusion, educational breakouts offer a versatile approach to integrating a wide range of content and skills into classroom instruction across various educational levels. They serve as an effective tool for enhancing student motivation, thereby supporting the teaching-learning process. Furthermore, digital platforms such as Genially facilitate the development of digital educational breakouts by providing templates and resources for their design. It is anticipated that this resource will not only support students’ learning of the targeted topics but also enhance their engagement. Once its effectiveness has been confirmed, the digital resource will be made available to the broader educational community.
