IDENTIFICATION OF COMMUNICATION BARRIERS OF ROMA CHILDREN IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS
B. Švidraň Basarabová
Roma children across Europe face various barriers to education and social inclusion, and Slovakia is no exception. Among the most serious factors affecting their school success are poverty, discrimination, and an insufficient support system from educational institutions and state policy. Marginalised Roma communities often live in social exclusion, which negatively affects not only children's access to education but also their motivation and school attendance. Observations by the State School Inspectorate indicate that Roma children's linguistic interactions are limited and therefore they do not benefit from the educational process as much as their peers. Communication interactions in school and everyday life are qualitatively different.
Communicative interactions in preschool play a key role in the complex development of a child's personality, language development, and later school success. This is confirmed by research which shows a clear relationship between the level of school language proficiency and a child's school achievement. Similarly, cultural reproduction theory considers language and cultural capital as key aspects of access to and success in education. As the formal language of school often differs from the language used in the home environment, children from socially excluded locations face various barriers. The lack of stimuli from their primary environment causes the narrowing and stagnation of the linguistic code.
The linguistic capital of Roma children does not differ only in the quality of the linguistic code. These facts make a strong case for the learning environment to be adapted to provide sufficient impetus to use language and to learn language in its natural form. The research will aim to identify and analyse the specific communicative barriers faced by Roma children aged 5-8 years from socially excluded localities in the educational environment of kindergartens and primary schools. Through systematic observation and analysis of video recordings, linguistic interactions in the school environment will be investigated, as well as the factors influencing children's active participation in the communication process. The collected data will then be analyzed using a specific analytical tool, focusing on behavioral behavior.
