FRAMING FOREIGN STUDENTS IN ONLINE ROMANIAN MEDIA: BETWEEN OPPORTUNITY AND THREAT
E.D. Lupașcu
In an increasingly globalized educational landscape, foreign students play a key role in the internationalization of universities. However, media discourse often frames their presence in polarized ways - either as an opportunity for academic and cultural enrichment or as a challenge associated with economic, social, or security concerns. Using a discourse analysis approach, this study examines a corpus of online news articles in order to analyze how online Romanian media constructs narratives around foreign students, exploring the interplay between emotional rhetoric, metaphorical representations, and discursive strategies. We aim to find out how foreign students are positioned in the national educational space, revealing patterns of inclusion and exlusion in the public and media discourse. The study will also include a case study on foreign students enrolled in various faculties to analyze how they have been impacted by the narratives constructed in media discourse, as well as to identify the main challenges in their academic inclusion process.
