Preschool years are crucial for children’s holistic development and for nurturing their potential. Emergent literacy can be fostered during this period, promoting fundamental attitudes and skills related to reading and writting. Emergent literacy is shaped by children's interactions with literacy materials and by joint experiences with family members, preschool teachers and peers, influencing later formal learning and academic success in elementary school. The Emergent Literacy Project (Erasmus+ 2023-2-PT01-KA210-SCH-000178874) aims to promote emergent literacy in preschool and family settings, encouraging collaboration between educational agents. As part of this project, an awareness-raising session was organized for parents/guardians of preschool children attending a public school in Portugal. The session intended: to inform parents/guardians about emergent literacy and how can it be fostered in children’s daily interactions; to raise awareness about the benefits from the collaborative work between family and preschool, emphasizing their role as partners in children’s emergent literacy and overall educational paths; and to present practical strategies and resources for supporting emergent literacy at home and in collaboration with preschool. The session was held in person at the school facilities, lasted three hours, and involved nine parents/guardians. At the end of the session, parents/guardians expressed their satisfaction and increased confidence in implementing strategies to promote children’s emergent literacy. This work highlights the importance of continuing initiatives that support parents and strengthen collaboration among educational agents in fostering children’s emergent literacy.
