The benefits of game-based learning are numerous and have already been identified by many researchers. Traditional teaching strategies can be enriched with games that aid learning, serve as ice breakers, and promote innovative creative thinking, while reducing stress in the classroom and improving communication skills. Game-based learning also motivates students and encourages cooperation. It makes students feel good and that is very beneficial as learning in general is highly impacted by emotions. There is a distinction between game-based learning and gamification. This paper discusses in detail the reasons that playing games need to be introduced into the learning process, especially in foreign or second language acquisition. It also justifies its use with adult learners as well, even though play has been mainly associated with childhood. The paper also examines the criteria for selecting games in a language classroom according to teaching objectives. Finally, an example of game-based task in teaching Greek as a foreign language is provided, as well as the specific approach used, targeted results, discussion and conclusions.
