Keio University (JAPAN)
Since joining FutureLearn in 2015, Keio University has offered high-quality courses on Japanese culture and various other disciplines, cultivating a stable online learning community internationally. The latest course, “The Meiji Restoration and the Modernisation of Japan,” intensively explores Japanese history through culture and historical figures. Unlike other Keio University courses, the video content of this course is delivered entirely in Japanese with English subtitles. To make the course relatable and accessible to learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, the course team has integrated a peer facilitator to actively engage with learners and bridge any gaps.

The facilitator joined the course as both a learner and a host. As a fellow learner, the facilitator was able to write comments and engage in discussions with other learners on a personal level. The role of the host also encouraged participation in the comments section, signalling to learners that the course team cared about and supported their interactions. The facilitator's genuine curiosity and personal engagement fostered deeper connections with learners, enhancing the learning experience by bridging cultural and communicative gaps.

The impact of this strategy was significant. The course experienced the highest engagement levels in terms of a notable increase in comments and interactions. Learners expressed great interest in the events and historical figures discussed in the course. Most importantly, they felt a sense of belonging, seeing themselves as alumni of Keio University, and showed increased appreciation for both the facilitator and the course team.

This innovative approach of the Keio University FutureLearn team demonstrates the significance of thoughtful education design. Integrating a peer facilitator and filling the cultural gaps has not only deepened learners' understanding of Japanese history and culture but has also instilled a lasting sense of connection to Keio University.
